Shizuoka Country Hamaoka Ogasa Course

Ogasa Course Information

This magnificent course was just redesigned by world famous course designer Rees Jones (the youngest son of Robert Trent Jones) and opened on December 5th of 2019. Masterfully designed to take advantage of and preserve the natural landscape and foliage, its new design has seen the course go from a two green configuration to a one green configuration featuring exciting undulations and generous run off areas. Rees was able to rework the location by focusing on playability with minimal bunkering and new large undulated greens. This provides for plenty of tactical pin positions and the course also saw expanded tee options to suit all levels of golfers.

Rees Jones, Inc. offers a classical approach to golf course design, decades of experience and a family heritage of excellence.

As a well-established golf course architecture company, Rees and Co. provide innovative solutions and tailor timeless, traditional designs to each client's needs. They build strategic options into courses to ensure flexibility and continuing interest for golfers at all skill levels. As stewards of the environment, they create sustainable golf courses that co-exist in harmony with nature and the Ogasa course is a perfect example of his work and design philosophy.

According to the course owner, Mr. Kawamura, "In this renovation, we originally planned to renovate the course facilities with the main purpose of revamping and rebuilding our water supply and drainage facilities after 50 years of use since opening, but I also wanted us to be reborn as a course suitable for a new era, so we could enjoy golf with a fresh feeling." After some research, I consulted the revered course designer, Mr. Rees Jones. Rees' design philosophy in remodelling is to fully check and take advantage of the original design, when possible, should it strike a harmony with the natural landscape. This while adhering to tradition and responding to the needs of his clients.

Some members may feel that this course is a completely new course, as the greens and bunkers changed a lot. We have also increased the number of holes that enjoy scenic ocean views and more holes that take into account the prevailing wind blowing from the nearby ocean. We want to provide a course where all golfers can continue to enjoy golf while considering strategic options that match their skills," he said, "and this revamp will make all holes with  two greens into one green, and so it's not just a big green, we completely rethought each hole and green individually. This included guard bunkers as well to maximise the challenge, excitement and playability for generations to come.
